Aesthetic

When we first started with aVoid, one of the first things we needed to know for sure was what it needed to look like. The game takes place entirely on a fake operating system, and we decided to lean fully into an early 2000s desktop vibe. Chunky fonts, flat windows, simplistic designs along with a feeling that this desktop isn't truly yours. All these elements combined created the atmosphere we we're hoping for.

Target Audience

We designed this aesthetic with two kinds of players in mind. First, the older crowd. People who actually used computers like this back in the day and will instantly recognise the look and feel. We wanted it to tap into that weird mix of comfort and unease.

Second, we thought about younger players who might not have grown up with this style of UI, but love retro tech, analog horror and nostalgic media. This aesthetic has a charm that you don't see in modern systems. The raw, low-res look is now part of the horror, not just a visual style.

The Atmosphere

The old-school desktop look isn't just for nostalgia. It fits the kind of horror we're telling. Psychological horror is most effective when it's subtle. It's not loud or flashy. It sits quietly in the background, waiting for you to notice. This is a horror game about trust, memory and control. So we tried our best to build a world that represents that, until it doesn't.

See you next time!

In our next devlog we'll talk more about the small details that make the OS feel alive! See you then.
