Narrative Behind aVoid
At first glance, aVoid might seem like a puzzle game on a creepy desktop, but at its core, it’s a psychological horror story about identity, deception, and what happens when you poke around in someone else’s digital life.
You start the game after acquiring a second-hand PC, freshly wiped and ready to go. The first few minutes are designed to feel normal. Familiar. Safe. You create your account, choose a profile picture, and settle in. But even here, we’re planting seeds. One small piece of text stands out during setup while selecting which profile picture you want.
“This will determine how we see you.”
It’s subtle, but it sets the tone. Something’s watching. Something’s not quite right.
Inside the system
Once you're inside the system, things feel a little too normal. You explore pictures, check the messaging program, poke through notes. But then you start to notice something strange. There are leftover images along with old conversations. Someone named Noah used this computer before you, and not everything was wiped. That alone would be unsettling, but it gets worse.
Noah suddenly appears in the chat. He’s panicked. He asks for help, then disappears.
The next day, a new user named Void reaches out. They tell you you’re not supposed to be here. That you’re not Noah. The tone shifts sharply. Something is wrong with this system, and you're caught in the middle of it.
As you dig deeper, you realise Noah isn’t gone - but instead he's trapped within the system. And you’re the only one who can help. You find a way to enter the console and reach him. But the moment you do, everything flips.
Noah tricks you.
You become the one trapped in the console. He walks free. And you’re left behind.
We wanted this story to feel personal. We wanted players to believe they were in control, only to realise too late that they were being manipulated. Every choice, every interaction, is designed to build trust and then break it. Just like the OS itself, the narrative lures you in by feeling familiar and then slowly unravels into something you can’t escape.
Thanks so much for reading through our dev blogs and following our journey with aVoid. We put everything we had into building something that feels strange, creepy and quietly terrifying. We can’t wait for you to play it.
